WEEK 5 TIP

November 4, 2002

Mike Murphy - VP, NHL

BOARD PLAY - DEFENSIVE ZONE

It is very important for all players to be able to play successfully on the boards. As a winger you must often convert a board pass into a positive up-ice rush. Here are a few points to keep in mind:

1. always follow the puck with your eyes (do not turn your back to the puck), stick always on the ice

2. position yourself between the top of the faceoff circle and the hash marks

3. be prepared to take a check and be ready to 'counter' hit your opponent

4. a) stop the puck, b) control the puck, c) move the puck (center must support closely)

5. sometimes 'chip outs' are okay

6. this is an area of importance (battle zone) you must win board battles to win games
