GOALTENDING
"The Importance of Skating"

Being a good skater is a tremendous asset for any goaltender. The better you are on your feet, the easier it is to not only move in and around the net, but also to perform the necessary techniques required to make saves under control. Balance is an important part of this and it is achieved by being an accomplished skater.

Ron Tugnutt of the Columbus Blue Jackets, a regular guest at our camp each summer, always tells our campers that, “Goaltending is about ‘starts’ and ‘stops’. Starting by pushing to get to where you need to be to cut down aggressive angles, then stopping when you get there and being set for the shot - then continuing this process as the puck is passed around until a shot finally happens.”

If you do this consistently, you will find yourself in the right spot to make saves more often, without the need to stretch and dive and perform acrobatics. So, always work hard at your skating skills in practice and remember, skating provides the foundation for the rest of your development as a goaltender.
