Two-on-One: Defense
Defending against a 2-on-1
rush is a tough assignment for defensemen.
The rule of thumb for defensemen used to be to stay in the
middle; the goalie had the shooter and the defenseman took
the player without the puck.
However, today's players shoot the puck too well to allow
an uncontested shot on net. Therefore, the defenseman's
responsible for stopping the pass across and taking away
the shot. The best way to do this is to slide, taking away
the pass and often any shot.
Watch your favourite NHL defenseman execute this skill on
television, then try it at your next practice. If you can
master the technique, sliding is an excellent way to
defend the 2-on-1.
