KEEPING A TIGHT GAP

Active feet are very important for defencemen on the offensive rush and when defending against a rush. Defencemen should always be involved in an offensive rush, hustling to make the opposition's blueline and sometimes to the top of the circles. This gives your team more options on the attack, but more importantly makes defending a counter-attack much easier. The key point here is keeping the gap tight between yourself and the oppositions' attacker. Keeping a tight gap enable defencemen to handle the rush at their blueline avoiding 'backing-in' to their own zone. Defencemen who are active on the offensive rush are in a position to keep a 'tight gap' on the counter-attack. So defencemen, if you want to have success defensively on the opponents' attack, be more active in your team's offense. Good offense can lead to good defence.
