Stick on the Ice

You've heard it a hundred times, "Keep your STICK ON THE ICE." Here are 4 reasons why it is so important to do so:

  1. Tip-ins: Many goals are scored this way… a player changes the direction of the puck catching the goaltender moving the wrong way or out of position. The player needs to maintain an open stance with his stick on the ice for balance and to avoid being knocked down. Always keep the stick angled towards the net.

  2. Availability: In order for a player to receive a pass from his teammate, he needs to support the puck carrier as best he can with his stick on the ice. This provides his teammate with a 'target' for a good outlet pass.

  3. Turn-overs: To be a good transitional team, you need to create turn-overs as much as possible. This is only possible if you have your stick 'on the ice' to take away your opponent's passing lane at all times. Once this is mastered, turn-overs will occur frequently and lead to many exciting scoring opportunities.

  4. Shooting Position: Having your stick on the ice allows for a better scoring opportunity. It enables you to shoot quicker and with a greater degree of accuracy… two very important ingredients to scoring goals.

Remember … keep your stick 'on the ice' and good things will happen! Be sure to work hard at this in practice and you'll begin to see the results when it really counts during your games.
