DEFENDING A LEAD

Good teams work hard to defend a lead once they have it. Here are ten tips to help your team defend the lead:

  1. get the puck in deep on the rush… don't give the opposing defencemen the opportunity to initiate a counter-attack
  2. avoid neutral zone turnovers
  3. avoid odd-man rushes
  4. get the puck out of your zone at all costs
  5. avoid retaliatory, stick or other needless penalties
  6. keep shifts short
  7. defence should not pinch
  8. no blocked shots - defencemen especially
  9. avoid back or drop passes
  10. goalies should freeze the puck as much as possible to allow fresh players onto the ice
