Featuring Hockey Tips from Roger Neilson and NHL Stars from the Roger Neilson's Hockey Camp

WEEK 18 TIP

January 28th, 2002

ROGER NEILSON
Camp Director
Ottawa Senators, NHL

Pinching

Pinching refers to defencemen in the offensive zone who move down the boards to confront a winger who is receiving a pass around the boards. The job of the pinching defenceman is to keep the puck in the zone or at least take the man. This is a skill that should be practiced.

Zdeno Chara and Wade Redden are the best at pinching on the Senators. For effective pinching, three conditions should apply:

1. There should be pressure by the forwards down low.

2. There should be a forward in position to support.

3. The pinching defenceman must get there before or at the same time as the puck.

Needless to say, lack of support, failure to take the man, or poor timing can result in a 2 -1 against. On the other hand, effective pinching really helps your team's forechecking game.
