Point Shots
Defencemen should always be encouraged to
take ‘smart shots’ when they are shooting from the
point. In most cases today’s goalies are just too good
to be beaten from a clear shot from the blueline. Here are
some tips to help your team and to improve your scoring
opportunities:
KEEP YOUR HEAD UP
It’s important to ‘see’ your shot… blocked
shots are wasted opportunities and can cause breakaways.
PATIENCE
If you have the time, be patient and wait for
teammates to get to the front of the net, causing screens
and increasing the chances for tips or deflections.
SHORT WIND-UP
It’s important to get your shot off as quickly as
possible. Short or half wind-ups are better than full
wind-ups when using the slap shot. Snap shots are also
very useful because of a quick release.
HIT A STICK
If you are looking for a deflection try to hit a
teammate’s stick. Your shot should be right along the
ice for this type of scoring opportunity.
CREATE REBOUNDS
If you want to cause a rebound, shoot the puck between
6 and 12 inches off the ice, in the middle of the net.
Shots too low can be deflected to the corner by the goalie’s
stick, and shots too high can be caught or steered to the
corner with a blocker.
LOW SHOTS
Keep your shots down. You can’t expect forwards to
go to the front of the net if the puck is whizzing by
their heads.
TAKE SMART SHOTS
Remember, making the right kind of shot and getting
your shot off quickly is more important than how hard it
is. Try some of these tips to improve your own point
totals while giving your team a better chance of winning.
