PLAYING THE PUCK ON THE BOARDS

A big part of any winger's game is the play along the boards. A player who goes into a battle for the puck and comes out with it more often than not is a valuable part of any team.

Three important steps to board play:

1. position
2. timing
3. awareness

It is important to be in proper position when playing the puck on the wall. One should never go face first towards the boards. A strong board player can time when the puck is coming around the wall and take it on the move. When playing a rimmed puck, the winger should know what is going on around him so he can make the proper breakout pass or the best play available to him.
