Defencemen Joining
the Offensive Rush

Defencemen should always be looking to join an offensive rush to create a scoring opportunity. An alert defenceman reads the play in front of him and 'jumps up' into the play to create an odd-man rush (4-on-3, 3-on-2, or even a 2-on-1). This is an effective offensive strategy because it creates an 'open-man' on the offensive rush, providing a better scoring chance.

However, defencemen must remember that their primary concern is to provide good defence. To avoid getting caught 'up-ice' a good rule of thumb is to join the rush, but only to the top of the opposing team's face-off circles. This strategy will allow you to create scoring opportunities without sacrificing good defence.

Remember, coaches have been looking for active defencemen who do not sacrifice defence ever since the great Bobby Orr.
