TIP- 2004

Defending Through Body Position

Steve Montador, Calgary Flames
This concept can be used all over the rink. More specifically, in the defending zone you want to remain in between your opponent and your net. This gives you the advantage in any 1-on-1 battles.

Also remember to:

  1. Know where the puck is at all times.

  2. Stick on stick - when engaged in a puck battle use your stick as well as your body to help you. Also, when a point shot is coming to the net, clear the opponents stick away from the net.

  3. 'Face up ice'. This means try keeping your toes facing towards your opponents end of the ice. it can help to keep you from 'running around the defending zone', as well you can see the whole zone easier.
